This is a most misunderstood subject and there's much more to it than many people realise.

It is no longer a matter of just installing the latest anti-virus software and forgetting about it. As well as installing and maintaining your antivirus software, protection also needs to be provided at the perimeter, where all incoming and outgoing traffic is examined and dealt with accordingly. This can be achieved by using the right type of firewall, placed at the perimeter of your network so that it inspects all incoming and outgoing traffic and stops anything that appears to be a threat.

In addition, most customers require remote access to the network so that they can work from home or when they are away. Email access via the latest 'smart phones' is also usually required. Unless set up properly these can be a huge threat and severely compromise the network.

Good housekeeping procedures, such as regular changes of password and ensuring that backups are carried out properly and tapes secured or taken off site, are also a vital but often neglected aspect of IT system security.
