Web Applications
Put quite simply, web applications are software applications that are delivered via the Internet (or an Intranet) and accessed using a web browser, rather than having the traditional Windows client/server architecture. Web applications (AKA browser based applications or Internet databases) are becoming increasingly prominent, especially with significant developments in Internet technologies.
The 'evolution' of Web 2.0 means the Internet is a much more widely accepted medium for interaction, both socially and commercially. Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook are almost universally accepted and there's a plethora of e-Commerce websites where one can purchase almost anything we care to think of.
Web applications are enormously diverse in both their type and purpose, and range from a simple content managed website, right through to a fully blown enterprise application e.g. a customer relationship management system (CRM), etc.
What are the advantages of web applications?
Web applications offer all of the functionality achievable with a traditional Windows database application; but with a number of significant advantages:
- Speed of deployment is a much faster and easier process with a web application, because there is no 'client' software to install, update or support - there is only one single system to maintain. Generally the 'cost of ownership' is much less because of this.
- Any updates or ehnacements to a web applicaiton are unilateral, meaning all 'users' are updated simultaneously.
- Browser based applications are platform independent, meaning you can run any type of computer operating system (e.g. Windows 7 or Mac OSX, etc) and the application will work.
- A web application provides much greater flexibility for your business because it can be accessed from anywhere in the world, providing the user has Internet access and a web browser.
- Web applications can be integrated to your website and your back-office systems. They can also share a common database to provide a cohesive and seamless business application.
