Over the last few years it has become very easy for non-technical people to design and publish their own website. Most common business applications such as Microsoft Word have some built in web design functionality, and there are also dedicated web design packages such as Microsoft Frontpage which are targeted at an average business user.
Whilst it is true that it is possible to create a good website using this approach, without the knowledge and experience of a professional web designer it is all too easy to end up with an amateur looking, hard to use website, that really doesn't give a good first impression of your business.
What makes a good web design?
Creating a website that makes your company stand out is not just about aesthetics. A good web design needs to address many other issues, some common examples of which are:
- It should be easy for a user to navigate and find the information they want.
- It should display correctly in all browsers and environments, not just Internet Explorer on Microsoft Windows! For instance, have you checked your website is displayed correctly in other browsers such as Firefox and Opera?
- It should display quickly and not leave users waiting for large images or applets to download.
- It should not rely on a user having third party software such as Java or Macromedia Flash installed on their PC.
- It should be created in such a way that search engines such as Google can navigate through it and add your pages to their indexes. This is commonly known as search engine optimisation.
- It should be accessible to users who are for example visually impaired or unable to use a mouse.
The Samarind approach
When you commission Samarind to design your business website, the first question we ask is "what do you want your website to do for your business?"
Websites come in all shapes and sizes, from a basic "brochureware" site to a full e-commerce application. By establishing your needs at the start and discussing what you do and don't want on your site, we can then use our experience to advise and guide you. We will also ask you to provide the text content for your site, and if appropriate, work with you to optimise this content for the web.
The next stage is to then create a professional-looking web design either from scratch or based on your existing branding and printed marketing material. We will ask you to approve this design, before we move onto translating this into a website.
